Lock, schlock, and barrel: defeating bicycle thieves with quality parts and smarts

The mean streets of Chicago are rife with bicycle theft and theft of parts from bicycles, even in winter. There is a robust community of thieves and fences dealing in stolen goods right now, even on Facebook. Why let your stuff into their market?

This is a free workshop helping you build security awareness and navigate the morass of bicycle security products and information. How can you tell the good products from the suspect? Bring your bike to the event and we'll construct a personalized locking plan for your bike based on where you lock up and your budget.

We'll have product demonstrations and hands-on practice and instruction on keeping your bike and its components as safe as you want them to be.

Sponsored in part by ABUS Security Tech, we'll have special deals on locks available only during the event, as well as some give-aways.

Kiddy cartage: Family cargo cycling - a panel discussion with professionals and novices alike

Family cargo cycling - a panel discussion with professionals and novices alike, featuring cargo bike pros:

Liz Durham
Andrea Newberry
Kristin Hovious

This is a rare opportunity to learn from and share with family cyclists from the community and beyond.

Bounce your questions and ideas off our expert panel of cargo bike moms who will weigh in on many topics of interest to urban cycling families, such as:

1. Motivating kids to ride, or to ride on or in a cargo bike.

2. Winter. Can you do it? How?

3. Responding to motorists with kids on board.

4. How did the cargo bike lifestyle grab you and hold on?

5. What modifications have you made to your bike to accommodate special needs?

6. Do you have a good support network for your chosen lifestyle?

As always we will have some refreshments. We don't have child care, but if your kids want to come and respect the adult conversation that's fine with us.

v1.5
The Haul: explaining different cargo bike styles, loading, and riding techniques
/

As this event takes place during business hours we expect a few things: more people interested in test riding cargo bikes in daylight; some interruptions by customers not attending the workshop; your unbridled, mounting obsession with the possibilities opened by the cargo bike lifestyle.

Get ready for a life changer.
